Job Description 2025-26

Residential Life provides quality academic support for residential students and abundant opportunities for positive peer interaction through tutoring, faculty interaction, technology, and programming. These services are supported by Academic Centers that are located throughout the residential communities. The student staff provides direct assistance to residents as well as creative programming to address students’ needs and are supervised and trained by full time, professional staff. All programs and services are evaluated by residents on a regular basis to ensure that the Centers are a dynamic and relevant part of the learning communities in the residence halls.

 

Student Academic Success (SAS) Coordinators are an integral part of the Residential Tutoring team. The Residential Tutoring Program provides drop-in individual and group tutorial services for students living in UC Berkeley’s residence halls and offers in-person and online tutoring. During regularly scheduled evening shifts, SAS Coordinators work Drop-In Tutoring Ambassador shifts, greeting students when they arrive in the Zoom waiting room or Academic Centers, facilitating student sign-ins, triaging tutoring sessions, including the management of wait-list queues. 

 

Essential Duties

 

Drop-In Tutoring Ambassador Shift Responsibilities (40%)

  • Participate in three in-person Drop-In Ambassador shifts per week
  • Greet students when they enter Zoom space and/or Academic Centers and facilitate sign ins
  • Triage student needs based on subject and course and assign to relevant tutoring tables and/or Zoom breakout rooms
  • Collaborate with fellow SAS Coordinators on shift to manage queue of students and recommend alternate tutoring locations
  • Monitor tutor attendance, including arrival times, to tutoring shifts
  • Follow up with students after tutoring sessions to ensure their needs are met and recommend future engagement with the program

 

Project Coordination and Administrative Tasks (35%)

  • Act as Project Coordinator for assigned subject team(s), including delegating tasks and ensuring deadlines are met
  • Attend weekly in-person staff meetings on Wednesdays from 6:30pm-7:30pm 
  • Facilitate assigned subject team meetings, creating agendas and encouraging team engagement 
  • Support Residential Academic Success Specialist in creating and managing subject team tutoring shifts and review session/workshop schedules and monitoring shift attendance
  • Collaborate with cohort of SAS Coordinators to:
    • Manage the RTP email, responding to inquiries and communicating with instructors
    • Maintain an updated external RTP schedule and webpage
    • Request advertising in ResLife newsletters and social media posts
  • Support advertising of the tutoring program by coordinating and attending in-class announcements, ResLife programs, and tabling events, including GBO Resource Fair and Cal Day

 

Mentorship and Leadership Responsibilities (25%)

  • Serve as a peer mentor and resource to the group of tutors in assigned subject team(s). This may include: 
  • Facilitating assigned portions of training and staff meetings
  • Facilitating one-on-one check-ins with assigned tutors
      • Attending check-ins with with tutors and Residential Academic Success Specialist
  • Supporting tutors understanding of RTP policies and practices
    • Attend bi-weekly, one-on-one meetings with the Residential Academic Success Specialist to discuss mentorship and leadership role
  • Serve as a course liaison for assigned subject teams by obtaining and communicating course logistics such as syllabi and exam dates. Report the need for content assistance to Residential Academic Success Specialist
  • Conduct observations to ensure tutors are implementing RTP tutoring techniques (pacing a drop-in session according to RTP practices, etc) during drop-in sessions. Observations for content accuracy are facilitated by Residential Academic Success Specialist
  • Support Residential Academic Success Specialist during fall and spring trainings by attending all sessions, facilitating assigned sessions, and coordinating meals and room reservations
  • Assist with recruitment, interviewing, and selection of staff tutors

 

Qualifications

Minimum

  • Current, full-time undergraduate student at time of employment
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.3
  • Demonstrated leadership experience
  • Strong customer-service skills and the ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Strong administrative skills, especially in the Google Suite and Canva or Adobe Illustrator, and ability to coordinate multiple schedules and sources of information
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, maintain cooperative peer relationships, work on a team, be dependable and attentive to detail

Preferred

  • Demonstrated experience leading or mentoring others, especially peers
  • Familiarity with tutoring and/or academic support
  • Taken one or more RTP covered courses at UC Berkeley
    • Writing: R1A, R1B, and AC
    • Physics: 7A,7B, 8A, 8B, 5A and 5B
    • Math: 1A,1B, 10A, 10B, 16A, 16B, 32, 53, or 54
    • Chemistry: Chem 1A and Chem 3A OR Chem 4A (4B) and Chem 3A

 

Terms of Employment

    • The SAS Coordinator will be compensated at a rate of $23.18 hour and is expected to work 8-12 hours per week during the duration of employment.
  • The SAS Coordinator is expected to follow residence hall policies and procedures during all work shifts. Failure to serve as a positive role model may result in personnel action up to and including dismissal.  
    • Each SAS Coordinator must attend three Drop-In Tutoring Ambassador in-person shifts per week, and they are expected to work during evenings and some weekends.
    • Must have access to a computer with internet access and a camera to be turned on during tutoring sessions, staff meetings, and trainings.
    • Attendance of mandatory in-person training. Staff must complete 27 hours of training with a target start date of October 6, 2025. 
    • Additional mandatory meetings include weekly, in-person staff meetings on Wednesdays from 6:30pm-7:45pm and bi-weekly 1:1 meetings with supervisor.
    • Must work a tabling shift during campus and departmental events such as Cal Day, Golden Bear Orientation, Hall Staff Training, etc. Dates TBD.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon a satisfactory job performance evaluation by the supervisor. Satisfactory job performance evaluation is defined as meeting expectations as defined by the job evaluation in all areas of the job description.

 

Expectations

  • Maintain positive working relationships with fellow Residential & Housing Services Staff well as Residential and Student Services staff members.
  • Do not allow access to non-student staff to the Academic Programs Office. Do not duplicate or loan keys to unauthorized persons.
  • Adhere to all crisis, evaluation, and emergency response procedures.
  • Be responsible with special staff privileges (i.e. use of office, phones, keys, office equipment, etc.).
  • Maintain confidentiality and objectivity in all matters related to Residential Programs business, students and staff.
  • Do not multitask during meetings (in-person & Zoom) & RTP shifts
