Job Description 2024-25

Residential Life provides quality academic support for residential students and abundant opportunities for positive peer interaction through academic advising, tutoring, faculty interaction, technology, and programming. These services are supported by Academic Centers that are located throughout the residential communities. The student staff provides direct assistance to residents as well as creative programming to address students’ needs and are supervised and trained by full time, professional staff. All programs and services are evaluated by residents on a regular basis to ensure that the Centers are a dynamic and relevant part of the learning communities in the residence halls.

Lead Tutors are an integral part of the Residential Tutoring team. The Lead Tutor position is designed for those who have had at least one year of peer tutoring experience. The Tutoring Program provides drop-in individual tutorial services for students living in UC Berkeley’s residence halls and offers in-person and online tutoring. . During regularly scheduled evening shifts, a team of Tutors assist residents with their coursework and assignments with the goal of developing academic skills that will enable students to succeed throughout their years at UC Berkeley. In addition to working at least two tutoring shifts per week, one of which must be in-person, the Lead Administrative Tutor works closely with the Residential Academic Success Specialist to provide administrative assistance for the Residential Tutoring Program.   The Lead Administrative Tutor also serves in a mentorship role for Tutors, specifically supporting professional development in time management and healthy work-life balance, participates in training, development, and recruitment, and must be prepared to step in as Lead Tutor for all subject teams if the team’s Lead is unavailable to perform their duties.These duties are carried out under the supervision of the Residential Academic Success Specialist, who is a full-time, career staff member. This position provides development opportunities for both RTP staff and the Residential community on wellness topics, academic work and social life balance to maximize academic success in a holistic way.

 

Essential Duties

Tutoring and Programming Responsibilities (50%)
  • Two in-person tutoring shifts per week. If subject coverage needs require additional shifts from a Lead Tutor, those may be worked online.This includes:
  • Assisting students with problem sets, papers, and other subject-related coursework.  Discussing difficult concepts and providing new approaches to understanding them
  • Actively listening and providing clear explanations
  • Creating a comfortable, friendly atmosphere by being approachable and showing enthusiasm towards the subject matter
  • Prioritize working with students individually, and encourage and facilitate students studying together.
  • Providing drop-in tutorial services in a timely manner, beginning and ending on time, and ensuring that all students who arrive on a given evening are seen
    • Attend weekly staff meetings on Wednesdays from 6:30pm-7:45pm. Rotate attendance to subject team meetings for all subjects.
  • Attend a minimum of two meetings per month with the Residential Academic Success Specialist to discuss team updates and self-development

 

Administrative and Miscellaneous Responsibilities (35%)
  • Manage the Residential Tutoring Program email and calendar, overseeing correspondance with instructors, resident assistants, and tutees and coordinating meetings and events as needed
    • Create and ensure external-facing documents, including schedules, flyers and other advertising materials, are up to date and accessible, utilizing tools such as Canva, Google Docs, and Adobe Acrobat
  • Support the Residential Academic Success Specialist in creating and facilitating meeting agendas and overseeing internal correspondence with tutors through Slack and email
  • Assist with recruitment, interviewing, and selection of staff tutors
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Mentorship and Supervision Responsibilities (15%)
  • Assist in developing and providing  academic and professional wellness training for staff tutors while being available to support and mentor tutors
    • Create and implement an academic wellness media campaign for residents
    • Participate in periodic observation and evaluation of subject tutors
  • Prepared to mentor a group of approximately 7-9 new and returning staff tutors in subject knowledge and tutoring/teaching techniques. This may include leading sessions during orientation and staff meetings, or meeting one-on-one with assigned mentees
  • Prepared to assist in the facilitation of the bi-weekly training and development for new tutors during the fall semester

 

Qualifications

Minimum
  • Current, full-time student at time of employment (undergraduate or graduate)
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (we do not round up), with special attention paid to grades in applicable tutoring subjects
  • At least one year of previous tutoring experience at a post-secondary level
  • Strong subject-based knowledge of either:
  • Math and other Math-based classes (e.g. Math, Statistics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science)
  • Humanities, Social Sciences, and Life Sciences (e.g. Writing, History, Psychology, Chemistry, Biology)
  • Strong customer-service skills and the ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Strong administrative skills, especially in the Google Suite and Canva or Adobe Illustrator, and ability to coordinate multiple schedules and sources of information
  • Ability to communicate effectively, maintain cooperative peer relationships, work on a team, be dependable and attentive to detail

 

Preferred
  • Experience leading or mentoring others, especially peers
  • Demonstrated skill or strong interest in wellness as it pertains to maximizing academic success
  • Experience or strong interest in creating and facilitating media campaigns via Instagram, email newsletters, Discord, and others

 

Terms of Employment

    • The Lead Administrative Tutor will be compensated at a rate of $22.07/hour and is expected to work 10-15 hours per week during the duration of employment.
  • The Lead Administrative Tutor is expected to follow residence hall policies and procedures during all work shifts. Failure to serve as a positive role model may result in personnel action up to and including dismissal.
    • Each tutor must attend at least one in-person shift per week and between two to four shifts per week total, and they are expected to work during some evenings, weekends, and holidays.
    • In the event that a Lead Tutor of any subject is not able to perform their duties due to resignation or prolonged absence, the Lead Administrative Tutor must serve as Lead Tutor in their absence.
    • Must have access to a computer with internet access and a camera to be turned on during tutoring sessions, staff meetings, and trainings.
    • Mandatory training dates: Monday, August 19th to Friday, August 23rd, 2024 (10:00am-5:00pm PST every day)
  • The Lead Administrative Tutor is expected to work during some evenings, weekends and holidays. A somewhat flexible schedule is required to accommodate workshops.
    • Additional mandatory meeting hours are weekly staff meetings on Wednesdays from 6:30pm-7:45pm.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon a satisfactory job performance evaluation by the supervisor. Satisfactory job performance evaluation is defined as meeting expectations as defined by the job evaluation in all areas of the job description.

 

Expectations

  • Maintain positive working relationships with fellow Residential & Housing Services Staff well as Residential and Student Services staff members.
  • Do not allow access to non-tutoring staff to the Academic Programs Office. Do not duplicate or loan keys to unauthorized persons.
  • Adhere to all crisis, evaluation, and emergency response procedures.
  • Be responsible with special staff privileges (i.e. use of office, phones, keys, office equipment, etc.).
  • Maintain confidentiality and objectivity in all matters related to Residential Programs business, students and staff.
  • Do not multitask during meetings (in-person & Zoom) & tutoring sessions
