2022 Summer Operations Resident Assistant Job Description
The Mission of Residential Life is to create safe and inclusive living learning communities that foster holistic education and global citizenship. Residential Education’s vision reflects a commitment to the intentional creation of effective and innovative strategies aimed at developing students to be engaged campus and global citizens, and active agents of social change. The Resident Directors (RDs), Assistant Resident Directors (ARDs), and the live-in student staff they supervise accomplish this through a combination of educational events, community building activities, student empowerment and personal conversations.
The Summer Operations Resident Assistant (Summer Operations RA) is responsible for working closely with other Residential Education staff to develop and maintain positive residential communities during the Summer Sessions. As an employee of the Residential and Student Service Programs, each Summer Sessions RA will adhere to, administer, and enforce policies and procedures as outlined in the Residential Education Student Staff Manual, the Residential Code of Conduct, the UC Berkeley Campus Code of Conduct University of California Personnel Policies and Procedures, and the University of California Policies applying to Campus Activities, Organizations and Students.
The Summer Operations RA also will work with different student populations than during the academic year, including visiting students and international students throughout Summer Sessions. Summer Operations RA will also support the Summer Bridge and Edge communities, a diverse and global community of entering undergraduates in a comprehensive six-week academic residential program. It introduces scholars to the structure and rigor of the research university, provides them with opportunities to foster meaningful academic and social connections with peers, staff, and faculty, and challenges them to take ownership of their academic journeys.
Summer Bridge is managed on behalf of the university by the Student Learning Center. Campus partners from over 60 departments collaborate closely in planning and delivering the program each summer. The intensive and rigorous program cultivates a diverse community of scholars and prepares them to engage actively with and meet the challenges of a large public research University. Freshman Edge is a specially designed program for first year freshman or transfer students who have been admitted to UC Berkeley for the coming fall. Freshman Edge participants not only get a head start on their college career but also save money by paying UC student rates rather than Summer Sessions visiting student rates.
The Summer Operations RA serves as a resource to both residents and staff, and should work to accomplish the mission and standards of Residential and Student Service Program and the Summer Bridge/Edge programs. As an employee of Residential Education, each RA will adhere to, administer, and enforce policies and procedures as outlined in the Residential Education Student Staff Manual, the Residential Code of Conduct, the UC Berkeley Campus Code of Conduct University of California Personnel Policies and Procedures, and the University of California Policies applying to Campus Activities, Organizations and Students.
The responsibilities listed below will be carried out under the direction of the Assistant Resident Director (ARD) and the Summer Sessions Resident Director(s) (RD).
Community Development (40%):
- Encourage personal, social, and academic development of residents by spending a significant amount of time on the floor or building area and getting to know students.
- Be available to assist students, implement activities, plan strategies, floor/area meetings, be visible in your community, etc.
- Assist the community in establishing strategies that aid in the development of a positive living/learning environment. Initiate, plan and implement Community Development Strategies with residents under the direction of the Summer Bridge/Edge Community Coordinator (CC) and the ARD.
- Demonstrate knowledge of campus resources in order to provide academic, personal support and referral.
- Act as a mediator in conflict situations when needed (i.e. roommate, noise, etc.).
- Work cooperatively with students to ensure an environment on the floor or building area that displays respect for the rights and privacy of others and promotes consideration of individual needs in a group living environment.
- Respond to student behavior that is inappropriate and/or in violation of campus policies and procedures (i.e., behavior that endangers the health and safety of residents or results in damage to University property). Confront the action and respond according to provided training, conduct procedures, and in consultation with (A)RD’s as needed.
- Create an inclusive environment in which the entire residence hall can interact and contribute to the living community.
- Model ethical behavior through personal and academic pursuits and adhere to all residence hall policies.
- Display appreciation of differences and assist students in developing an understanding of diverse cultures and lifestyles. Respect and treat all individuals fairly and equitably by being open and understanding of sexual orientation, socioeconomic, cultural & ethnic diversity issues.
Community and Educational Strategies (25%)
- Fulfill strategy requirements as set forth by the Summer Bridge/Edge CC, ARD, and RD.
- Assist in the coordination of student transition and orientation during the opening and closing throughout the summer.
- Conduct meetings for new residents that outline residential services and resources and addresses residential policy.
- Participate in Summer Bridge/Edge strategies (ie, resource fair, club fair, banquet, etc) and encourage residents to participate in Summer Bridge/Edge community events.
- Address community issues and generate area discussions and floor meetings as determined by the ARD and RD.
Staff & Administrative Responsibilities (25%)
- Attend and participate in all staff training.
- Attend weekly hall staff meetings or unit meetings prepared with weekly reports. Hall staff meetings will be on Tuesday evenings from 7 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Time commitments may vary.
- Participate in all individual, staff and group evaluations.
- Complete administrative tasks as needed in a timely and efficient manner.
- Perform regularly scheduled duty shifts. Resident Assistants are on night duty an average of 5-6 weeknights per month and 2-3 weekend nights per month as well as providing coverage during some vacation and holiday periods. Night duty begins at 7:30 p.m. and ends the following day at 8:00 am. Duty includes, but is not limited to, performing rounds twice a night, addressing any community issues.
- Attend weekly one on ones with the ARD.
- Ensure that the RD and ARD is informed and updated on all aspects of your work. This responsibility will entail meeting regularly with the RD and/or ARD and Community Coordinators to share job-related information, receive feedback and develop job-related skills.
Additional Duties (10%)
- Disseminate campus information and provide regularly updated bulletin boards as directed by the RD and ARD.
- Relate student concerns relating to residence life to the appropriate units of RSSP (i.e. RD, AD, Dining Manager, Facilities Manager, etc.).
- Perform other duties as assigned by the RD, ARD, and the administrative staff of Residential and Student Service Programs.
- Maintain positive working relationships with other Residential Education staff, RSSP staff, and the Summer Bridge/Edge campus partners.\
- Report maintenance issues in a timely fashion in order to maintain the physical condition of the residence halls. Provide immediate follow-up on reported problems.
- Do not duplicate or loan keys to unauthorized persons. Master keys are to be kept in their designated, secure location at all times when not in use and are not to leave the building or area without authorization.
- Be responsible with special staff privileges (i.e. use of office, phones, keys, office equipment, etc.).
- Maintain confidentiality and objectivity in all matters related to students and staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Resident Director or the administrative staff of Residential & Student Service Programs.
- Model appreciation of differences and assist students in developing an understanding of diverse cultures and lifestyles. Respect and treat all individuals fairly and equitably by being open and understanding of sexual orientation, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic diversity issues.
- This position is subject to a criminal background check. This position meets the following background check criteria:
- Possession of building master or sub-master key access to residences and certain other facilities.
- Works in a safe and responsible manner while not putting self or others at risk. This includes complying with applicable policies and regulations; using personal safety gear; observing warning signs; learning about potential hazards, and reporting unsafe conditions.
- Undergraduate or graduate student in good standing with the university and possessing a minimum 2.300 cumulative GPA and good standing with the University at the time of application and throughout the period of employment. Please note that GPA does not round up, any GPA below a 2.300 (2.299 or below) will make you ineligible for this position. Summer Bridge/Edge RAs are not required to be enrolled in academic courses during the period of employment for the summer.
- Full-time academic status (12-13 units per semester) during time of application. Exceptions must have the prior approval of the Resident Directors and Assistant Director.
- Experience with Summer Bridge/Edge program and/or first generation/low income student populations preferred.
- One year residence in a college or university residence hall, or a similar group living experience such as a Greek house, co-op, or theme program prior to term of employment.
Terms of Employment
- The Summer Operations RA is expected to serve as a role model for all residence hall policies and procedures as well as for the overall Summer programs. Failure to serve as a positive role model may result in personnel action up to and including dismissal.\
- The period of employment for this live-in position commences May 21, 2022 with training from May 21st – 27th. The position concludes at the end of Summer Sessions and the Summer Bridge/Edge Program following move out on August 13th.
- Active participation in all staff training which occurs prior to and concurrent with the opening of the hall. Preparation for and implementation of opening and closing of the halls may include, but is not limited to: administrative preparation, programmatic preparation, logistical preparation, and physical preparation of floors/suites, hall/area, and unit for opening and closing.
- The RA is expected to work during some evenings, weekends and holidays. This includes providing hall coverage during some vacation and holiday periods. A commitment of approximately 19 hours/week is expected, which includes required meetings, duty coverage, program implementation and attendance, being visible and available to residents, and addressing the specific needs of the community.
- All extended hall absences (more than 24 hours) must be arranged in advance with the ARD. Absences will not be approved the first and last two weeks of the summer.
- Any major time commitments (classes, additional employment exceeding 15 hours/week, etc.) outside the residence hall staff position must be discussed and approved in advance by the RD
- Continued employment is contingent upon a satisfactory job performance evaluation by the supervisor.
- Performance evaluation is defined as meeting expectations as defined by the job evaluation in all areas of the job description.
- Summer Operations RAs will receive a single room in housing in a traditional residence hall, and a Summer Meal Plan during the period of employment. The dates of housing and meals are dependent on the full or partial summer housing. They will also receive temporary housing during the period of training from May 21st – May 27th if needed.
Due to COVID-19, hall staff may be asked to adjust job responsibilities at any point to remain in alignment with public health and campus guidelines, which may become virtual or resume to normal operations over the year. Additionally, all student staff will be subject to any requirements, restrictions, policies, or changes that apply to the general student resident population.
