Student Analyst, 2021-2022
Residential Life is charged with the development and implementation of transitional programs for residential students and their families at the University of California, Berkeley. Residential Life creates residential communities that facilitate personal development and intellectual growth.
Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director, Assessment and Academic Success, the Student Analyst will be responsible for assisting with statistical analysis, survey design, writing reports and presenting results as requested. Research projects will range from advising on the design of simple assessment tools to large and complex projects that will have a substantial impact on an organization or the campus.
Other responsibilities may include collecting and coding data; identifying, cataloging, and referencing previously collected archival data; writing and interpreting reports and presenting technical information. Other duties may involve assisting with planning recommendations based on the assessment of research literature and reports; participating in and implementing departmental planning efforts; coordinating research-related requests received by the department from outside sources.

Data Collection Design & Implementation (45%)
- Assist with designing quantitative and qualitative instruments and processes appropriate for data collection tasks for the purpose of making administrative or policy decisions.
- Assist with the development of program and project evaluations including the determination of data collection procedures (e.g. sample size and type) to correspond with allocated budgetary and time constraints.
- Assist with developing data analysis plans, including designing guides for coding qualitative and quantitative data, data coding, and reviewing collected data prior to analysis.
- Statistically analyze collected data; use descriptive and inferential statistical analyses as appropriate. Investigate and apply innovative statistical data analysis techniques, as appropriate, to augment data analysis efforts.
Data Analysis & Reporting (50%)
- Design and produce graphic displays of statistical information (charts, tables and graphs), using appropriate software programs.
- Prepare reports for internal and external publication from collected data.
- Assist with publishing reports that contribute to the knowledge base of higher education, specifically university residential life, student orientation, and academic support services.
- Collect, analyze, and provide reports based on existing data, including but not limited to student conduct, time audits, program evaluations, and resident and campus student demographics.
- Participate in the utilization of research information: Interpret research findings and help apply such findings to operational effectiveness.
Student Staff Training, Evaluation and Assessment (5%)
- Make formal and informal presentations to individuals and groups to provide information and research results.
- Consult with Residential Life department directors and project managers to insure that data is collected, interpreted, and reported in accordance with evaluation and assessment best practices as described in the AIR (Association of Institutional Researchers) code of ethics, the ACPA (College Student Educators International) Assessment Guidelines, and related CAS Standards (The Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education).
- Consult with department directors and project managers to insure appropriate evaluation and assessment procedures are being used.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Undergraduate or graduate student in good standing with the university and possessing a minimum 2.300 cumulative GPA and good standing with the University at the time of application and throughout the period of employment. Please note that GPA does not round up, any GPA below a 2.300 (2.299 or below) will make you ineligible for the position.
- Strong statistical analysis skills
- Experience using quantitative analytical assessment, advanced level skills in Excel and R
- Program evaluation and data management skills
- Upper division undergraduate or graduate student
- Advanced degree in progress or equivalent experience in student affairs, higher education, or a related field
- Ability to collaborate with clients and peers
- Ability to learn, use, and maintain computer programs and databases
- Strong verbal, written, interpersonal, and virtual communication skills
Terms of Employment
- Maintain the required 2.300 minimum GPA throughout the term of employment
- Applicants will be asked to take a technical test
- Continued employment is contingent upon a satisfactory job performance evaluation by the supervisor. Satisfactory job performance evaluation is defined as meeting expectations as defined by the job evaluation in all areas of the job description.
- Analysts who display psychological behavior which raises concerns about fitness for the position may be required to complete an assessment of fitness and ability in order to continue in the position
- The Assistant Analyst will receive $17.75/hour for 7-10 hours per week

- This position will begin on August 26th, 2020 and end on May 14th, 2021, with the possibility of a position renewal.
- Maintain positive working relationships with other Residential Life & Residential and Student Services Program staff .
- Be responsible with special staff privileges (i.e. building access, use of office, phones, keys, office equipment, etc.)

- Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director of Assessment and Academic Success
