Position Description
Residential Life provides quality academic support for residential students and abundant opportunities for positive peer interaction through tutoring, faculty interaction, technology, and programming. These services are supported by Academic Centers that are located throughout the residential communities. The student staff provides direct assistance to residents as well as creative programming to address students’ needs and are supervised and trained by full time, professional staff. All programs and services are evaluated by residents on a regular basis to ensure that the Centers are a dynamic and relevant part of the learning communities in the residence halls.
Residential Tutors provide drop-in one-on-one tutoring for students living in UC Berkeley’s residence halls and offer in-person and online tutoring. Tutors must plan to attend 2-4 tutoring shifts per week as designated by the Residential Academic Success Specialist and are responsible for meeting RTP’s shifting coverage needs. During regularly scheduled evening shifts, a team of Residential Tutors assist residents with their coursework and assignments with the goal of developing academic skills that will enable students to succeed throughout their years at UC Berkeley. Tutors are assigned to a subject team: Chemistry, Math, Physics, or Writing. Tutors typically support two or more of the following classes Chemistry (1A, 3A, 3B), Math (10A, 10B, 16A, 16B, 32, 51, 52, 53, 54), Physics (7A, 7B, 8A, 8B), or Writing (all undergraduate writing). Tutors are required to attend in-person bi-weekly staff meetings on Wednesdays from 6:45pm-7:45pm. The duties of the Tutor are carried out with coordination support from Student Academic Success Coordinators and the supervision of the Residential Academic Success Specialist. This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the University of California and the United Automobile, Aerospace, and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (“UC-UAW Contract). Essential Duties
Tutoring (65%)
- Assist students with problem sets, papers, and other subject-related coursework. Discuss difficult concepts and provide new approaches to understanding them
- Listen actively to students and provide clear explanations
- Create a comfortable, friendly atmosphere. Be approachable and willing to help students. Show enthusiasm for tutoring and the subject matter
- Introduce residents to study strategies and skills, which will assist them with their coursework.
- Work with students individually
- Provide drop-in tutorial services, over Zoom and in-person within residence halls, in a timely manner, beginning and ending on time
- Seek feedback on your performance from tutees
- Maintain an orderly environment during tutoring sessions and in the Academic Programs Office
Training and Support (22%)
- Participate in mandatory in-person training. Training dates will be announced at a later date, but are typically one week prior to the start of the semester
- Prepare for and attend mandatory bi-weekly, in-person tutor meetings on Wednesdays from 6:45pm-7:45pm during the academic year
- Complete self-evaluations and performance evaluation processes
Administrative Responsibilities (8%)
- Check and respond to emails and Slack messages at least once a day
- Address all concerns with RTP Student Academic Success Coordinators and Residential Academic Success Specialist
- Follow through on supervisor requests in a timely manner. Submit timesheets, transcripts, shift reflections etc. by set deadlines
- Support tutor recruitment process by conducting subject matter-related role plays with candidates
Tutoring Preparation (5%)
- Maintain and deepen knowledge in concepts related to courses that are covered by RTP by reading course materials, such as textbooks, handouts, and web pages.
Education and Qualification Requirements
Minimum
- Current full-time enrollment in an undergraduate program at time of employment
- Must be in good academic and employment standing, in accordance with all University policies and procedures with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (we do not round up).
- Must have A- average in tutoring subject area courses as well as completion or current enrollment in at least one subject area course at UC Berkeley
- Completion of the following courses (or their equivalent) corresponding to tutoring subject:
- Writing: R1A, R1B, and AC
- Physics: 7A and 7B OR 8A and 8B OR 5A and 5B
- Math: 10A and 10B OR 16A and 16B OR 51 and 52
- Chemistry: Chem 1A and Chem 3A OR Chem 4A (4B) and Chem 3A
Preferred
- Strong customer service skills and ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds
- Ability to communicate effectively, maintain cooperative peer relationships, be a supportive and dependable team member, attend to detail, and interact with tutees in a friendly and approachable manner
Terms of Employment

- The tutor will be compensated $22.81/hour for trainings, all staff meetings, content review
- Tutors are expected to work up to 7.5 hours per week on average throughout the semester
- The tutor is expected to follow residence hall policies and procedures during all work shifts
- Each tutor must plan to attend three tutoring shifts per week and are responsible for meeting RTP’s shifting coverage needs, not to exceed maximum working hours per week. They are expected to work during evenings and some weekends
- Access to a computer with internet access and a camera is required. Tutors must request equipment in advance, as needed
- Active participation in staff training as well as on-going system-wide and area staff in-service training programs
- Attendance of mandatory in-person training. Staff must make arrangements to be physically present in the Berkeley area for training. Exact training hours will be confirmed in your offer letter, but please be back in Berkeley and reserve the entire calendar week prior to the start of instruction every semester for training. For example:
- If fall instruction starts Wednesday, August 19th, plan to be in Berkeley and start training Monday, August 10th
- If spring instruction starts Tuesday, January 19th, plan to be in Berkeley and start training Monday, January 11th
- Training must be completed in order to start working tutoring shifts
- Additional mandatory meetings include in-person bi-weekly staff meetings on Wednesdays from 6:45pm-7:45pm
Expectations
- Maintain positive working relationships with fellow Residential Life Staff, as well as Residential and Student Services Program (RSSP) staff members.
- Do not allow access to non-tutoring staff to the Academic Programs Office. Do not duplicate or loan keys to unauthorized persons
- Adhere to all crisis, evaluation, and emergency response procedures.
- Be responsible with special staff privileges (i.e. use of office, tutoring supplies, keys, office equipment, etc).
- Maintain confidentiality and objectivity in all matters related to students and staff.
