Residential Education provides academic support for residential students and opportunities for positive peer interaction through academic advising, tutoring, faculty interaction, technology, and programming. These services are supported by Academic Centers located in each of the Berkeley residential communities. Student staff, who provide direct assistance and creative programming to residents in each Center, are supervised and trained by full time, professional Residential Education staff. All programs and services are evaluated by residents on a regular basis in order to insure that the Centers are a dynamic and relevant part of the learning communities in the residence halls.

Residential Education Lead Tutors are an integral part of the Tutoring team. The Lead Tutor position is designed for those that have had at least one year of peer tutoring experience. The Tutoring Program provides drop-in tutorial services for students living in UC Berkeley’s residence halls. During regularly scheduled evening shifts, a team of Tutors assist residents with their coursework and assignments with the goal of developing academic skills that will enable students to succeed throughout their years at UC Berkeley. Lead Tutors are expected to work in one or more subjects in the following areas: math and other math-based classes (e.g. math, statistics, physics, engineering, computer science) or humanities, social sciences, and life sciences (e.g. writing, history, psychology, chemistry, biology.) In addition to providing Tutor services in the residence halls, Lead Tutors serve in a mentorship role for the Tutor team. Lead Tutors also participate in the training, development, and recruitment processes for Tutors and ensure that tutoring needs in their subject areas are being met and tutoring spaces and materials properly maintained. These duties are carried out under the supervision of the Academic and Leadership Coordinator, who are full-time, career staff.

Essential Duties

Tutoring and Programming Responsibilities (45%)

  • Tutoring 2-4 hours per week in the residence halls. This includes:
    • Assisting students with problem sets, papers, and other subject-related coursework.  Discussing difficult concepts and providing new approaches to understanding them
    • Actively listening and providing clear explanations
    • Creating a comfortable, friendly atmosphere by being approachable and showing enthusiasm towards the subject matter
    • Working with both with individuals and small groups; encouraging and facilitating group study
  • Providing drop-in tutorial services in a timely manner, beginning and ending on time, and ensuring that all students who arrive on a given evening are seen
  • Developing and leading workshops and review sessions as needed in the residence halls
  • Developing subject-based handouts and review materials for use during tutoring sessions or distribution in the Academic Centers
  • Compiling, developing, and maintaining tutor resources
  • Staying abreast of coursework, exam dates, and other relevant class information in subject areas; communicating this information to designated supervisor; planning workshops and review sessions accordingly
  • Attend weekly meetings on Wednesdays from 6:30pm to 7:45pm.  
  • Attend a minimum of two meetings per month with the Academic and Leadership Coordinator in their assigned unit to stay abreast of programming and tutoring needs in the unit

Mentorship and Supervision Responsibilities (25%)

  • Developing and providing subject-based training for staff tutors during orientation, at weekly meetings, and as needed or assigned by Tutor Program Coordinator
  • Mentoring a group of approximately 6-8 new and returning staff tutors in subject knowledge and tutoring/teaching techniques. This may include leading sessions during orientation and staff meetings, or meeting one-on-one with assigned mentees
  • Participating in periodic observation and evaluation of subject tutors

Assist in the facilitation of the bi-weekly training and development for new tutors during the fall semester

  • Assist in the feedback and evaluation of tutors as well as preparing the end-of-semester and end-of-year reports for subjects and units

Administrative and Miscellaneous Responsibilities (30%)

  • Ensure that tutoring spaces in assigned academic centers are maintained in a clean and orderly fashion after each shift
  • Contribute as assigned to Tutoring end-of-semester reports as needed
  • Assist with recruitment and interviewing of staff tutors during the spring semester and throughout the academic year, as necessary
  • Attend monthly student leader meeting
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Current, full-time student at time of employment (undergraduate or graduate)
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (we do not round up), with special attention paid to grades in applicable tutoring subjects
  • At least one year of previous tutoring experience at a post-secondary level
  • Strong subject-based knowledge of either:
    • Math or other math-based classes (e.g. physics, statistics, engineering, computer science)
    • Humanities, social sciences, and life sciences (e.g. writing, history, psychology, biology)

Preferred:

  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to communicate effectively, maintain cooperative peer relationships, work on a team, be dependable and attentive to detail
  • Experience leading or mentoring others, especially peers

Terms of Employment

  • The Lead Tutor will be compensated at a rate of $14.50/hour and is expected to work 10-15 hours per week during the duration of employment.
  • The Lead Tutor is expected to follow residence hall policies and procedures during all work shifts. Failure to serve as a positive role model may result in personnel action up to and including dismissal.  
  • Active participation in staff training which will take place prior to the commencement of tutoring services, as well as on-going system-wide and area staff in-service training programs.
  • The Lead Tutor is expected to work during some evenings, weekends and holidays. A somewhat flexible schedule is required to accommodate workshops.
  • Mandatory meeting hours are weekly Lead Tutor meetings on Wednesdays 6:30-7:45pm.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon a satisfactory job performance evaluation by the supervisor. Satisfactory job performance evaluation is defined as meeting expectations as defined by the job evaluation in all areas of the job description.

Expectations

  • Maintain positive working relationships with fellow Residential and Student Services members.
  • Do not duplicate or loan keys to unauthorized persons.  
  • Adhere to all crisis, evaluation, and emergency response procedures.
  • Be responsible with special staff privileges (i.e. use of office, phones, keys, office equipment, etc.).
  • Maintain confidentiality and objectivity in all matters related to Residential Education business, students and staff.
